"London calling…" – Strategies for international success: Presenting and writing in English
English-speaking conferences provide a great opportunity for doctoral students to present their academic work to a wider audience and to make new contacts, which is crucial for a successful PhD and an impressive CV. But how do you best write an abstract for a conference abroad? Or what happens when your abstract is accepted (congratulations!), but you are nervous about how to best present yourself and your project? And how can you get help if your conference presentation will be published as a longer article? How do you structure and write an article in order to be successful?
This seminar provides an introduction to presenting and writing skills in English – an "emergency package" for meeting the challenge when London (or any other English-speaking place) is calling… and you want to be prepared.
This seminar combines theory and interactive practice in presenting and writing in English. Participants learn the main skills of presenting convincingly – concerning argument structure, vocabulary, pronunciation and body language. They learn about different academic conventions of communication that apply to the English-speaking world and have the chance to get feedback on their presentation skills. The second part of this seminar deals with English writing strategies. The main focus will be on the specifics of scholarly writing in English, including structure, style and language, and patterns of argumentation. This course will also address practical issues such as ideas for improving one’s academic English.
Contents:
- Practising skills required for a successful presentation: voice and body language
- Learning strategies for structuring the presentations and surviving difficult situations during a presentation
- Differences in academic style between the German and English-speaking academic world
- Writing academic articles – the different components: the interplay of contents, argument structure, style, grammar, vocabulary, and formal matters
- Attentive reading and discussion of sample articles
- In the weeks between sessions, participants have time to write or revise short texts (abstracts, articles, or parts of their dissertation) to be handed in some days before the second meeting via email to the trainer and to a partner. In a second session, feedback will be given and the written work of the participants will be discussed in the group.
Requirements before the course:
- Participants have to read and prepare sample articles that will be made available before the course via email
- For the first session, each participant prepares a short oral presentation/talk (5-8 minutes) related to their project which they intend to present abroad

Anrechnung auf das Curriculum: Diese Veranstaltung entspricht 1 SWS im Curriculum des Promotionsstudienganges "Geisteswissenschaften" der Graduiertenschule.
Kosten: Die Veranstaltung ist inklusive aller Workshop-Unterlagen für Sie kostenfrei, lediglich die Verpflegung während des Workshops ist nicht eingeschlossen.
Die Zahl der Teilnehmer/-innen ist auf 8-10 begrenzt.
